Short Informartion About Types of Salmon
Coho Salmon is found in great numbers everywhere. It has steel blue or green
black chrome sides & whitish belly with moderate sized, irregular black markings along
the top sides. Spawning Coho Salmon undergo dramatic changes in appearance, a
deeping of the body with dark red hues. It can attain length to 88 cm, weight to 6.8 kg.
The average Coho Salmon is from 56 to 74 cm., weight is from 3.0 to 3.5 kg.
King Salmon is the largest of the five species of Pacific Salmon & the largest in the North-East.
It attains length to 147 cm & weight from 57 to 61 kg. Its average length is from 78 to 103 cm;
weight is from 5.5 to 17.0 kg. King Salmon's full boded, with sides of bright silver, a deep blue-black
back & large irregular cross markings across the upper sides & fines. Its belly is white; its tail is
broad & moderately forked with spots on both lobes.
There is abundance of Chum Salmon in the rivers in the West of Kamchatka. Chum Salmon
fresh from sea has grey or pink vertical stripes. Spawning Chum Salmon is calico in color, vertical
stripes flaming red, yellow & black are presented on the sides, while the head is greenish brown
with a touch of golden yellow on the cheeks. The average Chum Salmon's length is from 52 to
78 cm & weight is from 1.7 to 5.4 kg.
Kamchatka Steelhead Trout is found in a great number in the rivers & lakes in Kamchatka peninsula. It
is the sea-roving form of the American Rainbow Trout. It is usually more streamlined & slender than
Rainbow Trout. There are black, regularly spaced spots on the body with vertical pink stripes on
the back & sides. The length is from 65 to 90 cm, weight is from 0.5 to 1.5 kg, but sometimes it can
be bigger. It prefers a rapid current. Steelhead Trout is usually found in holding water
that has a depth of 4 feet or more. It usually opts for a rapid current or seams on the edge
the main current, near the boulders & locks.
Malma Trout (Kundzha) is found everywhere in the rivers of Kamchatka. It usually migrates from
river to sea & back again. The average Malma Trout's length is from 30 to 50 cm; weight is 1.5 to 2 kg.
During the spawning period Malma Trout changes its color. It has green back with red spots,
belly is usually red, head is black with yellow stripe near the jowls, and flippers have three colors: red, black & white.
East Siberian Char (Arctic Char) is usually pale-dark with big markings. It is lighter in the sea, spawning East
Siberian Char becomes dark & has dark-grey or brown color, and fair spots become inconspicuous. East
Siberian Char attains length to 99 cm & weight to 11 kg. The average East Siberian Char's length
is from 35 to 55 cm, weight is from 1.5 to 2.3 kg.
Arctic Grayling considered as sub-speciesof Siberian Grayling. It differs from the other form because it has
long spots on the dorsal fin. It can be found only in the moderate current, in the lower reaches &
almost never in the upper reaches. The best places for fishing Arctic Grayling are places with back
stream, between current & shore & also near boulders & snags. Big Arctic Grayling can be found
in the deep holes. After 8-10 years it can weigh about 1-1.5 kg.
